Highlanders rugby stars Hosea Gear (left) and Ma’a Nonu (right) got in touch with nature during their Queenstown stay last weekend.
Fresh from losing their Super 15 pre-season match against the Blues 29-31 at the Recreation Ground last Friday, Gear and Nonu took their families to Queenstown’s Kiwi Birdlife Park for a private tour.
They were shown around the park by head keeper Paul Kavanagh (centre), who introduced them to Rex the tuatara.
Wildlife manager Nicole Kunzmann says: “They enjoyed their visit and sponsored our new bush regeneration programme by purchasing some plants from our nursery for us to plant back into the park to further encourage our wild native species back into the area.”
Former Blues player Nonu has been enjoying his introduction to the south since joining the Highlanders this season – last week he told Mountain Scene a team trek on the Greenstone Track was the first time he’d gone bush.
