Spring snow catches out drivers

The first day of spring brought a light dump of snow to Queenstown’s hills and mountains – catching out drivers.

Several cars were abandoned on the Crown Range after it became difficult to pass without snow chains.

The road is now clear of snow but chains must be carried. Queenstown’s council has though issued a black ice alert for the district with wet roads and temperatures dropping.

Snow arrived yesterday afternoon and by 6.30pm it had settled on the range.

It’s great news for the resort’s skifields with 12cms of fresh snow for Coronet Peak and 7cm for the Remarkables. Chains are required for 2wd vehicles.

Queenstown Airport is fully operational.
