Tina Ashmore (far right) and her husband Cameron Mitchell built in Quail Rise four years ago to send their future children to school in Frankton.
Now it’s unlikely they can send their two-year-old son Zack to Remarkables Primary when he turns five.
“When we were buying the section it was pitched as a place that there’s going to be schools nearby, and that was attractive to us,” Ashmore says.
“We’re not going to move, but we’re disappointed. We’re closer to the primary school than Kelvin Heights, as the crow flies, yet we’re not in the zone.”
She adds: “Maybe they should have built a bigger school.”
Who’s in and who’s out
The proposed new Remarkables Primary home zone only includes:
The south side of Frankton Road from Shotover Bridge to Kawarau Road
All streets accessed from McBride Street and Yewlett Crescent
Kelvin Heights and south to Wye Creek including Jacks Point.
Families in Lake Hayes Estate, Quail Rise, Tucker Beach, Marina Heights and the northern side of Frankton Rd could be excluded from enrolling in the future.
Students currently attending the school but living outside the zone are unaffected, as are their younger siblings.
Kids already pre-enrolled but living outside the proposed zone will no longer be able to attend from a date yet to be determined by the Ministry of Education.
If it comes into effect and subject to MoE approval, the new zone will commence from the start of term two next year.
