Snow guns are blanketing the slopes at a Queenstown ski field ahead of the 2013 season.
The guns at Coronet Peak cranked into action yesterday morning with more natural snow forecast to fall this weekend.
Twenty of the ski field’s 213 snow guns switched on automatically as temperature and weather conditions reached optimal levels between 5am and 11am.
The mountain is scheduled to open on June 8.
Ski area manager Ross Copland is confident that over the coming weeks conditions will enable regular top ups to ensure a good base.
Coronet Peak staff have been finalising other operational logistics ahead of opening, including completion of summer maintenance and employment of seasonal staff.
“All of this happens behind the scenes,” Copland says.
“So when we start making snow it’s the sign that the season is upon us which creates a real sense of excitement.
“That’s when the buzz starts and when businesses gear up for the season.”
