Sky’s the limit for firefighters

Two brave Queenstowners will do battle for the resort at the tough, annual Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge in Auckland.

Clare Mallard and Greg Thompson are set to run up all 47 floors of the 328 metre-high Auckland landmark wearing firefighting kit – including a 22kg air cylinder.

A total of 280 firefighters from New Zealand, Australia and the United States are taking part in the May 23 event to gather funds for the national Leukaemia and Blood Foundation. Last year $94,000 was raised.

Local emergency service volunteers Mallard and Thompson are training hard for the challenge by scrambling up Bob’s Peak in their full gear.

“You can only do the climb up to Skyline a couple of times a week because it’s so exhausting,” dental receptionist Mallard says. “But it’s the most comparable thing we have around here to going up the Sky Tower.”
