A distinguished New Zealand artist’s oil painting of a famous Maori leader was unveiled by the subject himself in Queenstown last Thursday.
Craig Primrose presented the painting of Sir Tipene O’Regan as a gift to Ngai Tahu during the NZ Seafood Industry Conference.
O’Regan was chairman of the Ngai Tahu Trust Board when it settled its treaty claims with the Crown in the ’90s.
Primrose, who splits his time between Arrowtown’s Millbrook Resort and Auckland, says his subject sat for him for three hours in Christchurch – “he’s a lovely man”.
Known for his portraiture, landscapes and sporting images, Primrose is represented locally by art dealer and consultant Kate Blomfield.
