The Arrowtown Scout Group is celebrating an award for top camp site at the New Zealand Jamboree in Hamilton.
A 20-strong party of local youngsters plus eight adults travelled to the prestigious event at the Mystery Creek Events Centre last week, which attracted 300 competing scout groups comprising more than 5000 youngsters.
It was the first time the Arrowtown contingent had independently attended the national jamboree, held every three years. They’d raised a whopping $85,000 to get there.
“We won something every day but to get the supreme award for having the overall best camp site is a terrific achievement,” group co-leader Geoff Clear says.
“It was good for the maturity and growth of our troupe to go there and succeed against the odds.”
As well as assembling and maintaining their camp site, the scouts also tried caving, abseiling and orienteering.
The award is also a timely send-off for Clear and Jeff Long, who have co-run the Arrowtown scouts for the past eight years, but are soon stepping down to make way for new blood.
