Only an entrant from New Zealand’s biggest city could pip Queenstown’s newsweekly at the national Qantas Media Awards.
Mountain Scene was runner-up to The Aucklander in the Suburban and Community Newspapers category at the newspaper and magazine awards in Wellington last Friday.
From more than 100 suburban and community papers throughout NZ, only the Auckland and Queenstown publications were worthy enough to be finalists.
“We’re pleased, of course,” Mountain Scene editor-in-chief Garry Ferris says. “But it makes us determined to take top spot next year.”
Both finalists are “innovative”, the Qantas judge says.
Mountain Scene already holds the Community Newspapers Association accolade of Best All-Round Newspaper.
The Queenstown newsweekly also won its Qantas segment outright in 2006 and was runner-up in 2007.
“National awards of excellence like these are important quality indicators to our loyal readers and advertisers in these challenging times,” Mountain Scene general manager Richard Thomas says.
The Aucklander is part of the multi-national APN chain and distributed as a supplement inside the NZ Herald, APN’s Kiwi flagship.
