Santa’s little Queenstown helpers had a bunch of new tools to play with at St Joseph’s School last Friday.
Forty children dressed as their favourite Christmas characters spent the afternoon using equipment purchased for the school’s “Discovery Time” programme.
St Joe’s received grants from SkyCity Casino Trust and the Community Trust of Southland to buy woodwork tables, a fully kitted-out cooking trolley, water play table and a dress-up box.
Deputy principal Lisa Collins says Discovery Time – two
hours a week – is part of the new curriculum teaching Y
ears 0-3 basic skills.
“The children thoroughly enjoy doing this each Friday and really direct their own learning – selecting the work stations they want to use,” she says.
“Some of the children went as far as saying last week was the best one yet.”
