Sake drop hits the spot

Queenstown’s sake brewery has won silver in a prestigious international competition after raising the bar.

Still New Zealand’s only sake brewery, Zenkuro Sake scooped the medal at the recent London Sake Challenge for its drip-pressed junmai ginjo-grade brew.

“We’re absolutely stoked and relieved as well,” head brewer/director David Joll says, “as it’s a higher-category grade of sake that’s harder to make.”

He also notes that it’s rare for non-Japanese breweries to medal, though Zenkuro also won a gold and a silver at the last London competition in 2016, when it was less than a year old.

The gong comes at a perfect time – the brewery this week launched into the British market.
