Queenstown is hosting the inaugural New Zealand Rural Games next February.
The programme will include wood chopping, sheep shearing, sheep dog trials, coal shovelling, speed fencing, gumboot throwing, speed milking as well as Highland Games events.
The programme also includes live music and entertainment.
The Games, which will be televised, are being managed by the NZ Rural Sports Trust.
The trust’s board includes former All Blacks captain and Rugby World Cup-winning coach Sir Brian Lochore and former Dairy Woman of the Year Barbara Kuriger.
The first major sponsors for the February 7-8 event, announced this week, are Wild Buck beer and building supplier PlaceMakers.
NZ Rural Games founder and trustee Steve Hollander says the support he’s received from sponsors reflects the significant contribution the rural sector makes to NZ’s economy and national character.
