A main road into Queenstown has been blocked by rock fall.
Large rock falls in the Kawarau Gorge on State Highway 6 have closed the road between Cromwell and the Crown Range Road turnoff to Wanaka, the New Zealand Transport Agency website reports.
The NZTA website’s latest 6.16pm update says the closure is about 2km west of Roaring Meg and further updates are expected tomorrow.
A significant amount of rain in the Wakatipu in the past few days is understood to have caused the rock fall.
A detour into Queenstown around the Crown Range to Wanaka and then over the Crown Range to Queenstown is available – but a crash on this road had momentarily closed it too.
