Workers have started clearing a massive rock fall that has blocked the road linking Queenstown and Glenorchy.
The giant slip, which occurred before 9am today, fell in an area known as the “narrows” on the Glenorchy side of Bob’s Cove on Glenorchy Road.
Geotechnical experts visited the site by helicopter and established the slip is a “gradual, progressive failure” – but it’s safe to start clearing, Queenstown Lakes District Council works infrastructure boss Mark Kunath says.
Work will carry on into the night.
“We hope to re-open the road to one-lane traffic in the morning,” Kunath says.
QLDC has sorted free boat transport for about 30 Glenorchy kids and commuters on their way home tonight, and there’ll be a return trip running tomorrow to return people to their cars.
“Anyone that needs to make arrangement to get home can contact the council now and we will ensure we get you home safely this afternoon,” Kunath says.
