Labour front-bencher, former local MP David Parker (right), says the Government needs to replace the old single-lane Kawarau Falls bridge.
NZ Transport Agency has said a new bridge mightn’t be built till well after 2016.
“What surprises me a lot is that the Government made a lot of noise during the start of the recession about bringing forward infrastructure spending in order to stimulate the economy and south of Christchurch got nothing,” Parker told Mountain Scene last week.
But he doesn’t think the Government should help fund a new convention centre.
“I would think it would be great for this area but this Government’s got us to the point, partly through unaffordable tax cuts, where we’ve got a $16.7 billion deficit this year.”
