Residents of the Wakatipu are encouraged to dress up for an historic re-enactment of the arrival of the Anglican church.
A Wakatipu Anglican Parish service at 11.30am this Sunday at St Peter’s on Church Street will be followed by special activities to mark the 150-year anniversary.
The congregation and members of the public are welcome to join a walk to the statue of Queenstown founder William Rees on the waterfront.
Nearby Eichardt’s Hotel garden bar will then host a re-enactment of the first meeting between Bishop Henry Harper and Rees – who became a preacher – to establish the church locally.
A portrait of Rees preaching at St Peter’s – donated by artist Craig Primrose, Rees’ great granddaughter Rosemary Marryatt and The Rees Hotel – will also be unveiled.
