Queenstown’s winter started with an almost 30 per cent increase in international visitor nights.
Statistics New Zealand figures, released yesterday (Monday), show Queenstown guest nights – including foreign and domestic visitors – for June were a record 168,430, up 17.7 per cent on the same month last year.
International visitor nights, 62.9 per cent of the total, rose 28.4 per cent and domestic nights rose 3.2 per cent.
June’s previous record, of 144,440 guest nights, was set in 2010.
A delighted Destination Queenstown chief executive Graham Budd says June’s increase was largely due to average stay nights increasing.
“That’s a trend we’d like to see continue,” he says.
Budd says winter got off to a great start with all ski areas opening on schedule with very good snow cover.
“The month started with the Queen’s Birthday weekend holiday and finished on a high with a very successful American Express Queenstown Winter Festival.”
