Queenstown’s winter night life lights up

Queenstown’s Coronet Peak skifield is going for broke this winter to give skiers and boarders a really big night out.

With Coronet the only New Zealand skifield offering night skiing, operator NZSki has announced a major beef-up of its after-dark offering.

Eighty new lights adding over four kilometres of trails will double the accessible terrain on Friday and Saturday nights from late-June to September.

“Lights are going in to cover Million Dollar, Wall Street, The Hurdle and Eighth Basin, while still lighting up the main M1 trail and the beginners area,” mountain manager Ross Copland says.

The new lights will give a higher output and more uniform coverage, he adds.

Copland also announces a new feature at the Elephant Pit – a giant 16 x 11 metre airbag for riders to try new tricks safely.

Coronet is trying to seduce night owls into spending more time up the mountain.

New off-slope night facilities include two Italian wood-smoke ovens offering $10 pizzas, an outdoor Corona bar, a mega video screen and a DJ station.
