Jazz stars of the future will shine in Queenstown this weekend.
Emerging young musicians and singers from around New Zealand showcase their talents at two Jumpstart contests at JazzFest.
The AJ Hackett Bungy Youth Competition is for the 12-17 age group, with heats at St Peter’s Parish Hall from 12-3pm on Saturday – the final is at the Village Green at the same time on Sunday.
Sunday also sees the final of the Nzone Emerging Talent Competition, for those aged 18-25, at the Millennium Hotel from 8pm.
As well as local entrants, the competitions have attracted youngsters from as far afield as Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill.
“There will be 13 finalists in the Emerging Talent competition who were chosen by a selection panel from DVD and YouTube submissions,” organiser Stephanie Percy says.
“The standard is extremely high.
“In the competition for the younger kids, we have singers, bands and various instrumentalists – including a
13-year-old clarinet player.”
The youth contest has solo vocal, solo instrumental and band categories.
Solo vocal and solo instrumental sections are featured in the contest for the older age group.
