Queenstown businesses have scooped the major gongs at a prestigious backpacker industry awards night spanning Australia and New Zealand.
Shotover Canyon Swing won Best Activity in New Zealand and Shotover Street’s World Bar was voted Best Bar in New Zealand – both for the third time in four years.
Nomads Queenstown won Best Backpackers.
The Golden Backpacker Awards – held in Sydney – are judged by consumers.
Destination Queenstown consumer marketing boss Lisa Nilsen, who attended, says such awards offer highly valuable recognition for Queenstown and the country.
“What makes these three wins so special is they’re awarded by a market sector we work very hard to attract to Queenstown.
“Peer recommendation is so important in the modern age and particularly in the independent market sector.”
The Shotover Canyon Swing markets itself as the world’s highest cliff jump, whilst favourite backpacker haunt of 14 years the World Bar is famous for its tea-pot drink mixes.
Nomads, commonly referred to as the ‘flashpackers’, has been open about a year.
The awards haul is a turnaround from last month’s New Zealand Tourism Awards, in which Queenstown didn’t win a thing – not one resort company or individual collected any of the 17 awards on offer, after most failed to enter.
