A Queenstown man was kicked twice in the head during a violent unprovoked attack in Earnslaw Park after a night out.

The 32-year-old was set upon while walking through the CBD park in the early hours of Friday morning.

Police are appealing for help to identify his attacker.

He is described as about 1.8 metres tall, mid 20s, possibly has ginger hair, and spoke with an Irish accent.

Detective Matt Jones says: “The victim thinks he blacked out and when he came to there were four or five people around him.

“He heard one say ‘you kicked him in the head, there are cameras everywhere, you should run’. One of the party referred to the man as Seamus.”

The victim was approached at 2.40am on Friday morning by a man he did not know, who was shouting at him

After some pushing and shoving, he was kicked in the back of the head while on the ground. He suffered only minor injuries, bruising and a sore neck, and turned down medical attention.

Police captured part of the assault on CCTV from a distance and are studying footage from other cameras in a bid to identify the man.

Detective Jones believes someone in the group of five, which included at least one female, knows the attacker.
