Police have arrested a Queenstown man in relation to an alleged $80,000 fraud of the locally-held National Sevens event.

Today’s (Wednesday) arrest of the 50-year-old Queenstowner comes after a lengthy investigation, Queenstown detective Matt Jones says in a statement.

The man faces two charges of using a document to obtain a pecuniary advantage and four charges of causing loss by deception.

Jones says the charges relate to the organising of the Queenstown Annual Pub Charity Rugby Sevens.

The offences are alleged to have occurred between January 2009 and December 2010.

The arrested man has been bailed to appear this coming Monday in the Queenstown District Court.

Jones says police won’t be making further comment as the matter is before the court.

The sevens was staged successfully in Queenstown for the 10th year running back in January.
