A young Queenstown musician was judged best soloist in the regional finals of talent contest Rockquest.
Wakatipu High School’s John Manulea placed first after performing at the Queenstown Memorial Centre gig on Friday night.
Fellow pupils Isabella Reid and Lucy Nichol – performing as duo Lucy and Izzy – finished second in the solo/duo category.
But fledgling Queenstown band Euphoric Division could not manage a clean sweep for the local school.
They finished third behind two Mt Aspiring College bands – Mainstreet and Fire Eyed Society. There was however some consolation for Euphoric Division bassist Sam Maxwell.
Maxwell – who won Queenstown’s own original music contest Songstars last year – was juged best musician.
The four acts top placed acts won musical gear and the opportunity to gain selection for the national final in Auckland in September.
Smokefree Rockquest founder and director Glen Common says: “They now send in videos of their original music that will be juged in August as we lead up to the national final.
“The process demands creativity and musical ability, as well as learning to work together as a group and developing the organizational skills they’ll need if they’re going to make it on the Kiwi music scene.”
