Queenstown toilets demolished

Contractors began work this morning (Wednesday) demolishing the ramshackle toilets at Earnslaw Park.

Base Contracting is clearing the site for Amalgamated Builders, which has the tender for a 10-unit replacement costing $450,000.

Base manager Julian Kinnaird says: “We should get the whole site clear by tomorrow.

“We’ve one guy on the digger and two trucks running.”

The toilet block has stood at the downtown Queenstown lakeside park for 29 years. Its replacement, which includes a kiosk, has been designed by Michael Wyatt Architect Ltd.

A council recommendation to let the kiosk for South America pasties, or empanadas, is out for public comment until March 15.

Temporary toilets have been installed on site, next to Patagonia Chocolates Ltd.
