Queenstown teen arrested after chase

A Queenstown teenager was arrested after 40-minute car chase through Kawarau Gorge that injured a police officer.

The 17-year-old youngster was allegedly driving a Subaru at high speeds with two passengers.

A police patrol attempted to stop the vehicle in Cromwell at 7.40pm on Friday.

But the youngster allegedly failed to stop and raced to Queenstown along State Highway 6 through the gorge, before turning around and speeding back towards Cromwell.

Southern Police senior sergeant Darryl Lennane says: “The pursuit ended just outside of Cromwell after the Subaru struck the pursuing police patrol vehicle.”

A police officer received a minor injury to his hand from the airbag activation in the patrol vehicle.

Both vehicles sustained damage and the road was blocked for a short time.

The teenager has been charged with failing to stop for police and reckless driving.
