Queenstown student actors win national competition

Wakatipu High has won a national one-act play competition.

A 16-member acting troupe from the school swept the New Zealand Theatre Federation’s one-act play competition in Hamilton yesterday (Saturday).

They performed Bang Bang You’re Dead, a controversial play based on a student who shot his parents and classmates in the US.

Directed by Wakatipu High’s head of drama Kate Moetaua, the troupe were up against seven other school and community theatre groups.

Wakatipu High also took the ‘best technical’ award and Victoria Boult, who played the lead character, won the emerging talent award.

The school’s journey to Hamilton started in Invercargill last month when they won ‘best overall performance’ in the Southland/Otago heat.

They then hosted the bottom-of-the-south regional finals on August 15 which they also won, qualifying for the nationals along with three other South Island schools/theatre groups and four from the North Island.

Four of the cast, Victoria Boult, Nikau Stuart, Tatjana Reid and Vanessa Woodward, also made last year’s competition final.

The other members of this year’s winning cast are Ashley Burney, Jack Swale, Hugh Taylor, Ella Buchanan, Samantha Perry, Theo Baumfield, Daniel Lewis, Kate Ward, Georgia Budd, Reuben Scott, Alex Forsyth and Beatrice Onions.
