Queenstown snow cave man survives first two weeks

Queenstowner Blair Whitaker (right) is almost halfway through his mission to live in a snow cave for a month.

The NZONE parachute packer has spent about two weeks in his snow home up The Remarkables, raising funds for local charity Aspiring Avalanche Dogs.

Whitaker, 33, says: “It’s going well. The worst thing is waking up. That’s probably the coldest time of the day – and it’s a struggle putting socks and boots on without falling over and getting all wet and cold.”

Queenstowners and tourists have been giving generously – donations, bottles of booze and verbal support have all been keeping Whitaker’s spirits up.

“The keas are curious and getting closer every day. By the end of the week, they’ll be inside with me.”

Soon they’ll be able to have their own space – Whitaker is building a second room.
