Out-of-work NZSki staff who won’t get paid till the snow arrives got a feed from Queenstown’s iconic burger joint today (Sunday).
Fergburger forked out cheeseburgers to mountain workers employed by Coronet Peak and The Remarkables – about 400 in total – who are only paid once the slopes are up and running.
NZSki employee Sam Smith, 24, thought the freebie was “epic”.
Smith, who has worked on the local slopes for a few seasons, says it’s the first time he’s seen the mountains open late.
The snowboard instructor says NZSki has handed out care packages and the warm food makes a change from the grub he’s been downing, but he hasn’t been hit too hard by the lack of income.
“We haven’t been struggling yet but we don’t know when we’re going to open,” Smith says.
Fergburger is also handing out the tasty takeout food to staffers tomorrow between 2pm and 5pm.
