The boss of a couple of Queenstown pubs is hoping people will be feeling a bit glassy – but not in the traditional sense.
Both Pub on Wharf and Muskets and Moonshine have been crushing empty glass bottles in a bid to be more eco-friendly, and now they’re hoping someone will take the glass off their hands.
Muskets director Chris Buckley, who’s also general manager of Pub on Wharf, says the crushed glass had been going to a local drainlayer, but delivering it had started to get “frustrating”.
“It started getting really awkward to drop it off.”
He’s hoping it might be of use to someone in the community.
The bars have also been implementing other measures, including ditching plastic straws and not lining smaller bins with rubbish bags, he says.
Buckley, who also works on sustainability initiatives with Hospitality NZ, says Queenstown’s hospo providers are doing a “bloody damn good job” when it comes to promoting sustainability.
“Queenstown’s really effective at change,” he says.
“I don’t think anyone comes here thinking ‘I want to leave Queenstown worse than when I got here’.”
