Queenstown police say girl is ‘absolutely’ not Madeleine

Queenstown police say a young girl spotted in the resort and thought to be Madeleine McCann is not the missing British child.

Detective sergeant Brian Cameron says police have identified the mistaken girl and are “absolutely satisfied” she’s not Madeleine.

Dozens of police officers were told to look out for the child after a local retailer reportedly saw a blonde girl with a similar eye defect, accompanied by a man with dark hair, enter her store on New Year’s Eve.

It’s not the first time that someone had contacted police remarking on the similarity between the two girls, Cameron says.

He declined to release any details of the identified child.

The woman who thought she spotted Madeleine contacted a 24-hour Find Madeleine phone number and has spoken to British police.

Madeleine was three years old when she went missing from a resort in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3, 2007, while holidaying with her family.

The latest “sighting” of her comes after suspected sightings in Dunedin, Milton, Alexandra and Queenstown in 2010.
