Queenstown festival slides on

Queenstown’s madcap suitcase race has been won for a second year running by a member of the ‘Jamaican bob sled team’.

More than 40 people dressed up and shot down the Coronet Peak course yesterday (Saturday) – day nine of Winter Festival.

Invercargill electrician Matt Malcolm took the title, beating fellow sparky and team member Greg Hamil, last year’s winner.

Queenstowner Hayley Ackerman, dressed in a tight red vinyl suit, was the fastest female.

Entrepreneur and former extreme ski champion Dr Sam Hazledine won the Dash for Cash event – which saw competitors race down M1 trail before sprinting back up.

And skier Mitchey Greig – another Olympian competing in the Winter Festival – won the women’s title.

“Snow was flying everywhere as contestants fought hard in their events, and as always there were a few thrills and spills, and as much competition for the costumes as for the placings,” festival manager Lisa Buckingham says.

Mark ‘SWAT man’ Wilson won the best dressed in the suitcase race, dressed in speedos and a flak jacket, with both events part of Mountain Mayhem.

Tonight the Community Carnival heralds the end of the ten-day festival, with an eclectic mix of music and food stalls dotted around the CBD streets.
