Queenstown’s annual Christmas Spectacular concert takes flight this year from inside the Events Centre to an outdoor downtown venue.
Organiser Simon Green is shifting it to the Recreation Ground on December 14 – a move he says follows sell-out audiences over its past six years.
“Each year we’ve had to turn people away, which is extremely disappointing. We’ve built the brand and the event up now to a point where we’re very confident that people will come and enjoy it more as a community day out.”
An outdoor setting also allows a longer show, Green says.
“In the Events Centre you’ve got basically an hour-and-a-half before the kids are going a little bit crazy.”
Following a first-half hit parade of Christmas songs, music will range from classic rock through to contemporary hits.
The newly renamed Shotover Jet Christmas Cracker – again featuring appearances by Santa Claus and the male ballet – will finish after 10pm with a fireworks display.
A soloist at numerous Christmas in the Park concerts in Christchurch, Green is producing and directing the show for the Queenstown Lakes District Council.
About 200 performers will be required – bookings for auditions, on September 27 and 28, can be made by emailing Green at email@example.com.
Green is hoping for a crowd of more than 4000.
In case of rain the concert will run the next day, a Sunday.
