Queenstown cafe told to pay $2000 to ex-chef

A Queenstown business has been ordered to cough up $2000 in unpaid wages.

Chef Simon Stearman complained to the Employment Relations Authority that he was owed that money from when he worked at Traffic Café on Shotover Street in 2009.

Stearman said cafe owner Oxygen Cuisine Ltd had issued him two cheques for $2100 but both had been declined by the bank.

Since 2009 he’d received only $100 back.

ERA member Helen Doyle states in her decision Oxygen Cuisine director Stephen Mills didn’t dispute the outstanding wages at the ERA hearing last month.

“During the telephone conference he raised other matters that he indicated may be pursued in a separate application against Mr Stearman.

“He also explained the financial difficulties the company is facing and that he has suggested other work opportunities for Mr Stearman to assist with the repayment.”

Doyle ordered Oxygen Cuisine to pay Stearman the unpaid pages and to also reimburse his $71.56 filing fee.
