Private hospital’s plan is still a goer

Plans to expand Lakes District Hospital could provide an alternative for a company that wants to build a private hospital.

Southern Cross Hospitals has resource consent for a hospital and medical centre – including operating theatres – at Remarkables Park, but plans were put on hold pending Southland District Health Board’s review of services at Lakes District Hospital.

However, Southern Cross boss Terry Moore says he still intends to bring elective surgery to Queenstown – and SDHB’s new plans to turn LDH into an integrated family health centre (IFHC) “provides an option” for his company.

“The IFHC concept has merit.

“From an elective surgical view, in this market we need public and private volumes to make it viable. The IFHC certainly provides an option to do that.

“We’d have to weigh that option up if it was available to us versus the concept that we had at Remarkables Park.

What we don’t know is the exact form of the option at the public hospital site.”

Southern Cross will make a submission to SDHB’s proposal, Moore says.
