A Queenstown police officer has saved a Puerto Rican man’s life this morning (Thursday) after rescuing him from Lake Wakatipu.

Queenstown sergeant Derek Ealson says police saw the young Puerto Rican in trouble in the unforgiving lake about 40 metres from the jetty at Queenstown Bay at 2.20am.

Ealson says constable Aaron Redealli jumped off the jetty fully clothed into the near freezing water.

Once Redealli reached the man, the pair struggled for a period until the constable dragged the man to shore.

Both the men were both unable to walk and needed assistance.

The Puerto Rican was taken to Lakes District Hospital at Frankton and treated overnight for hypothermia.

“Without the swift actions of Redealli who entered the water and rescued him, it is certain he would have lost his life,” Ealson says.
