Police name Arrowtown car crash victim

The woman who died after crashing her car into a poplar tree near Arrowtown this morning has been named.

She was Carolina Patron Costas, 23, from Argentina, police say in a statement.

Costas was the sole occupant of a 1989 Honda Civic when she veered off Malaghans Road and hit a tree at about 6.50am today.

No other cars appear to be involved.

Costas had been travelling towards Arrowtown. Skid marks on the road indicate she veered right, then tried to over-correct the vehicle, veering off the left-hand side of the road, acting sergeant Terry Wood says.

“The full impact was on the driver’s side.”

Local emergency services and a forensic crash investigator from Alexandra attended soon after 7am, where she was pronounced dead at the scene. Costas’ body was removed from the vehicle at about 11am.

“Queenstown police would like to speak to anyone who may have seen her metallic light brown Honda Civic vehicle travelling towards Arrowtown, between 6.15am and 7am, on Mallaghans Rd, west of Coronet Peak Station Road,” Wood adds.

Costas was wearing a seatbelt and there were no obvious signs of alcohol involved, he says.

The matter will be referred to the coroner. The Embassy of Argentina have been assisting with enquiries with her family.

A detour via Dalefield and Hunter Roads was lifted at 11.30am.
