Queenstown police are investigating an alleged sexual assault in the downtown Earl Street public toilets.

A statement released this afternoon says the assault is alleged to have happened at about 2am today (Wednesday) in the loos, which are on the corner of Marine Parade near Queenstown Gardens.

The toilets have been cordoned off since 4am.

The complainant is a 20-year-old female visiting from the United States, the statement says.

She had been socialising with friends in the Rees Street area of downtown Queenstown before the alleged assault.
“Police have conducted an extensive scene examination and are currently reviewing available CCTV footage,” the statement says.

“Police would like to hear from any person who were in the area of Marine Parade, lower Church Street and the vicinity of the war memorial park at around 2.00am.”
