A Queenstown woman faces serious assault charges after allegedly biting a police officer.
The 23-year-old woman is accused of biting the female officer on the thumb with enough force to break the skin.
“It is quite a serious offence,” sergeant Kate Pirovano alleges.
“She ended up biting the officer on the thumb, breaking the skin, and was hanging on, not letting go.”
The unemployed woman, originally from England, was being treated for a gash on her head at Lakes District Hospital shortly before 4am on Monday.
“She was intoxicated and became abusive, so police attended.”
The woman has been charged with injuring with intent and is due to appear in Queenstown District Court on Tuesday.
Officers also arrested an Indian man at 12.10am on Tuesday after he allegedly spat at and attempted to bite officers.
The 26-year-old, who lives in Queenstown, had become abusive during a taxi ride and attempted to grab the gear stick, police say.
“The female taxi driver called police and the man ran off. He was located fallen down a nearby bank on Frankton Road.”
The man was charged with disorderly behaviour, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.
A 22-year-old English man and 20-year-old Kiwi were arrested for fighting outside a Queenstown CBD dairy.
Police broke up the altercation outside Camp Street Night ‘n’ Day at 3.50am on Saturday.
“They were both intoxicated,” senior constable Chris Blackford says. The men were given a pre-charge warning.
A 17-year-old Queenstown man was arrested at 6pm last Sunday in relation to a fight in the town centre last week. The youngster is due to appear before a Justice of the Peace on June 11.
Officers also arrested a 30-year-old Invercargill man who was allegedly shouting obscenities outside Winnies bar on The Mall after being chucked out at 1.40am on Sunday, and a 19-year-old New Zealand man causing a scene outside Starbucks nearby an hour earlier.
Burglary at The Bathhouse
A 24-year-old Queenstown man has been arrested in relation to a burglary at a Queenstown restaurant.
Alcohol and meats worth more than $1000 were reported stolen from The Bathhouse on Marine Parade on Monday night.
“Officers attended a local address on an unrelated inquiry on Tuesday night and discovered the stolen property,” Pirovano says.
The stolen alcohol included two beer kegs worth $263 each.
The man was charged with burglary after being arrested at 10.30pm on Tuesday and is due to appear in court on Tuesday.
