Point won’t lose pints

As one Arthurs Point pub comes down, another springs up.

Former Timaru developer and now Rarotonga resort owner Barry Ford is to open a bar and 80-seat restaurant in the Point’s Rafters Barn, which he’s owned since 2005.

The new pub is directly opposite Coronet Peak Hotel, which Ford owns and leases out, but the two businesses will be run separately.

“I’d hoped to have the new place open by now but there’s been some hiccups,” Ford says while in Queenstown this week.

Ford remains confident the pub/restaurant will be open by October 1 and promises some distinctive features – goldmining relics in the bar, for instance.

The old Arthurs Point Pub – on the Queenstown side of the Shotover River – is now about half-demolished, co-owner Rick Pettit says.

After an archaeologist inspects and photographs the part still standing, Pettit hopes to have the building completely bowled by the end of next week.
