PM reiterates Queenstown convention centre backing

Prime Minister and Tourism Minister John Key today (Wednesday) reiterated the Government is prepared to put some funding into a Queenstown convention centre.

Addressing a press conference at the Tourism Rendezvous New Zealand trade show in Auckland, Key said the Queenstown Lakes District Council hasn’t yet formally asked the Government for money.

“But my guess is they probably will, from everything I’ve heard every time I’m down there.

“We wouldn’t fund the bulk of the convention centre nor does it look likely we will need to because there are quite a number of interested parties but we’re not ruling out putting in some cash.”

Key said the Queenstown council had identified a site – the old camping ground off Man Street – and was going through a draft design and consultation process.

“The land looks like it can be consented quite quickly.”
