A Queenstown American is producing a documentary series on New Zealand wine destinations that uniquely targets Gen-Y consumers.
Wine nut Colin West, 24, is putting together a web series profiling six NZ wine regions, integrated with their adventure activities.
West – who hopes to sell the series to TV networks – is co-presenting with Auckland-based presenter and regular Queenstown Winter Festival host Jo Holley.
Local shooting this month will highlight Queenstown and Central Otago vineyards, paragliding and a downhill mountain bike challenge between West and Holley.
“By the end of this trip I want to make Jo fall in love with wine and she’s going to make me fall in love with NZ,” West says
“Right now, the misconception is wine’s connected with older generations and money and art, whereas where I’ve been in the industry for the past seven years it’s usually about going for a surf in the morning with the winemaker then going to work in the vineyards.
“We’re introducing wine to all our viewers in a much more lighthearted way than a lot of people may have done in the past.”
This includes having top sportspeople like local mountain biker Josh Clark and surfer Maz Quinn talk about wine.
West – who’s lived in Queenstown for nine months and worked at upmarket Gantley’s Restaurant and The Spire – calls his series Wine Region A Minute (RAM) Experience.
Holley says: “The opportunity to travel around NZ and learn all about wine and do epic adventures in-between is something I’m interested in.
“It’s my cup of wine.”
After shooting the series for release between July and September, West plans to take his concept overseas, starting with Australia next year.
The Queenstown launch party will be at The Ballarat Trading Co on February 23 from 7pm.
