Parking cock-up

Queenstown’s council has performed an embarrassing U-turn after stinging motorists for parking in Alert Level 3.

On Tuesday afternoon it announced it would reinstate parking charges and enforcement when we dropped down from Alert Level 4 yesterday.

Council boss Mike Theelen, contacted yesterday after a maelstrom of protest — including almost 40 hostile comments on council’s Facebook page — admitted it had been their intention to follow the same parking regime they used during last year’s lockdown, when council didn’t charge for parking at Alert Level 3.

Shortly afterwards, Theelen came back to say: ‘‘We are reverting to our previous arrangement and not charging at Level 3.’’

So council would refund anyone who’d paid to park?

‘‘If someone can show us their ticket for [yesterday] then we are happy to refund,’’ Theelen says.
