Opening closer but Coronet cans night skiing

Lack of snow has canned Coronet Peak’s scheduled opening of night skiing.

All other Queenstown WinterFest activities have been moved to The Remarkables ski area, including today’s Dog Derby event and the Suitcase Race, part of Mountain Mayhem on Saturday.

Coronet Peak boss Ross Copland says the field is unlikely to open for skiing this weekend but snowtubing is in full swing.

He says management is taking things day-by-day but the night skiing news is not a shock’ as opening is weather dependent.

Coronet Peak opened on June 11 but unseasonable weather has stripped the mountain of snow.

Copland: “We are rebuilding. There will be more snow-making tonight, so [it is] getting closer.”

The closure has left hundreds of ski-workers on reduced hours but Copland says staff morale is good.

Festival director Lisa Buckingham says while it’s disappointing night skiing can’t go ahead, she’s pleased The Remarkables is able to host all other programmed events.
