Olympic cities go for gold

Global pitches for the 2016 Olympics are on the agenda for a Queenstown meeting of international sports administrators late this month.

Mayors from bid cities Madrid, Chicago, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo are due here to woo up to 150 Olympic Committee delegates.

Also present will be International Olympic Committee president Dr Jacques Rogge (right) of Belgium and Englishman Sebastian Coe, now Lord Coe, the former middle-distance running great who chairs the organising committee for the 2012 London Olympics.

Lord Coe will give an update on 2012 preparations.

Queenstown’s Millennium Hotel will be the venue for the 17-country Oceania National Olympic Committees general assembly from March 31-April 2.

New Zealand Olympic Committee president, Queenstowner Eion Edgar, says four years ago he recommended NZ host the assembly in 2009 because it’s “bid-city year” – the 2016 host will be chosen in September.
