Nothing fishy here at all

Former Prime Minister Jim Bolger (second right) was in celebratory mode during a board meeting in Queenstown this week.

Bolger chairs Queenstown-based Mt Cook Alpine Salmon, which last week won the supreme award at the New Zealand Food Awards – and three category awards – for its Saikou sushi-grade salmon.

Also pictured (from left) are board members Geoff Matthews, Tom Pryde, Bob King, Adam Fairmaid, Sir Eion Edgar and general manager Janine Tulloch.

Company chief executive Matthews was personal private secretary to Bolger when he led NZ in the 1990s.

Bolger says he was delighted to be asked to chair the board because he licensed salmon farming when he was Minister of Fisheries and agreed to it being farmed in the Mackenzie Country canals when he was PM.

“We’ve got these pristine waters coming out of the Alps and we want to produce a product – a top-line salmon in the world – that New Zealanders collectively can be proud of.”
