Not just a bedtime story

A Queenstown theatre group is preparing to perform storybook classics – with a twist.

Queenstown co-writers Victoria Keating, Chris Parvin, Mike Legge and Andrew Edgar have reworked famous tales by Roald Dahl, Mark Twain and Hans Christian Anderson for their upcoming performance Twisted Tales.

The Remarkable Theatre show, in the Queenstown Gardens later this month, also involves adapted Greek myths, Monty Python sketches and the story of King Arthur.

A cast of 18 local actors will perform in the show, which involves scenes moving around different parts of the Gardens.

Keating says she was inspired to write Twisted Tales after recalling that many of the books she read to her step-children only tell one side of the story.

“There’s a lot more depth to be explored.”

The company hopes the outdoor setting will be embraced as part of a celebration of summer, allowing people to enjoy the council’s new landscaping and give audiences the experience of theatre in a different space.

Twisted Tales, part of the annual Summerdaze Festival, is at 6pm and 8pm next Friday and then 2pm, 4pm and 6pm next Saturday and Sunday. Entry fee is a gold coin donation.
