Fire chiefs are warning Queenstowners that bonfires are banned in residential areas of the town.
Ahead of Guy Fawkes Night tomorrow, (Monday) principal rural fire officer Gordon Bailey says the CBD and suburbs of Queenstown are bonfire free zones.
“Bonfires are great fun but unfortunately they create a fire risk in built-up communities so people will have to settle for fireworks,” he says.
Residents in rural areas are allowed bonfires but must obtain a permit from Queenstown Lakes District Council.
Bailey also urged people to use fireworks safely.
“Watch for kids, animals, dry vegetation and trees,” he says.
“Make sure you light them in a wide open area well away from anything that could catch fire. Keep a hose or a bucket of water handy.”
More information on rural fire permits can be found on Queenstown’s council website.
