Anyone keen for a lake swim is invited to Queenstown’s Southern Lakes Swimming Club’s season-launching open day today by the Frankton Marina scout den.
Committee member Sheena Ashford-Tait says the club provides a chance for swimmers who’d like to tackle the lake in a controlled, safe environment.
They’re also inviting runners who’d like to recuperate from Saturday’s Queenstown International Marathon.
“People might swim for 45 minutes to an hour, or newbies might swim for 10 minutes, and that’s fine.”
Swimmers can use a 500m course in the boat area or swim 2000m towards Alpine Village and back on a swim lane that’ll soon be marked out with safety buoys.
“We’ll have kayakers, paddleboarders and a boatie helping new people.”
Registration’s at 9.30am, $15, with a BBQ afterwards. Annual membership’s $25. Wetsuit advisable.
Last summer, the club’s first season, they swelled from 10 members to about 45, “so there are a lot of mad people around”, Ashford-Tait says.
