The introduction of direct flights from Wellington to the resort has resulted in record numbers for Queenstown Airport.
Last December, Jetstar brought in the first Queenstown-Wellington air route and since then, passenger numbers between the two destinations have tripled to 11,416 in January alone.
Previously, the route didn’t contribute much to overall domestic passenger volume, QAC acting CEO Simon Barr says.
“However, latest figures show that in January, 13.2 per cent of all our domestic travellers were on a Queenstown-Wellington service, compared with 4 per cent in previous months.”
In January, 86,426 domestic passengers passed through Queenstown Airport – up 18.5 per cent on January 2011.
“This was the largest number of domestic passengers to pass through Queenstown Airport in one month ever,” Barr says.
“A main driver behind this record monthly growth was the new Jetstar Queenstown-Wellington daily flights.”
The success of the new service is also testament to how airlines and airports working closely together, he adds.
“To secure the new service Queenstown Airport worked with Wellington Airport and Jetstar to make a case for the need for an additional daily jet service, as well as show how it could help support Jetstar in promoting the new route to make it a success.”
