New DQ boss’ team review

Destination Queens­town’s new boss plans reassessing the team structure before moving to fill the gap left by his promotion. 

DQ general manager marketing Graham Budd was this week announced as the chief executive, replacing Tony Everitt who is now Tourism New Zealand’s man in China. 

Budd says he’ll take time to pause and review the role he’s vacated before taking a recommendation to the DQ board. 

“It’s appropriate for me to discuss and consult with the team and other stakeholders around town, not necessarily about that role specifically but just around our structure and the way we’re resourced. 

“That might include some opportunity for tweaking current roles in the senior team. I’ve been very careful not to pre-determine or have preconceptions about what that should look like.” 

His predecessor Everitt told Mountain Scene in his exit interview that DQ staff were in the nice position of being run off their feet, which Budd agrees with. 

“We absolutely are – and that’s one of the reasons for the pause. We’ve been put under increasing demand for our resources.” 

Budd adds: “We’re going to recruit – we’re not downsizing, that’s for sure. I can’t say we’d be looking for extra bodies but I’m not ruling anything out. It’s time to review, consider and consult.” 

The former marketer for multinational giants like Unilever and Colgate Palmolive says he’ll take a few weeks to form a view and expects it’ll be another couple of months before they recruit a replacement. 

Budd’s appointment to the top job comes after five years at DQ and his third attempt but he says it wasn’t a difficult decision to apply again. 

“I was passionate about wanting the job, felt I was the right person for the job and felt I had a lot of support.” 

Budd inherits about 2000 Twitter followers built up during the tenure of Everitt who was an enthusiastic Tweeter. 

“I’d certainly like to manage everyone’s expectations in that I won’t be as prolific as Tony,” he says.
