Queenstown’s favourite newspaper has taken out the major gong at the annual Community Newspaper Awards.

Mountain Scene won Best Overall Newspaper – for the second year running -and best Community Involvement campaign at the awards dinner in Queenstown on Saturday night.

Mountain Scene’s sales boss Nicole Bell claimed the award for the best advertising portfolio and James Allan was named junior photographer of the year.

Mountain Scene editor Ryan Keen says it’s an honour to successfully defend the title of Best Newspaper, and get the gong for Community Involvement after an extensive and long-running campaign examining the state of local health services.

The paper started writing about shortcomings in elderly care facilities back in December, 2004.

“Mountain Scene’s catchcry is the free voice of Queenstown and such an award acknowledges our commitment to that goal.”

Mountain Scene has also just been named as one of five finalists in the running for Community Newspaper of the Year at the prestigious Qantas Media Awards. The winner will be announced next month.
